Departmental COVID Contact

Dr. Engy Said has agreed to be our departmental COVID contact. If you happen to test positive, it is imperative that you let her know so that she can work to determine if additional people need to be tested and/or removed from the schedule. We have links on the homepage at the top to guide you with official UCSD guidelines for what to do if you are a) exposed or b) test positive for COVID. This will be especially important if we end up getting an outbreak among our clinical colleagues.

Please note, the VA protocol for COVID exposure is different—currently requiring all who work at the VA to get formally tested with confirmed negative COVID testing before returning to work.

Universal healthcare worker masking and mask reuse

BIG UPDATE. We got a late Sunday evening update to the UCSD mask use policy. UCSD has walked back their policy against universal masking. Per new guidelines 3/29/2020, everyone entering the hospital will receive a earloop mask. We are recommended to use masks for ALL face-to-face patient encounters. Updated documents can be found under COVID19/Clinical Resources

Also new for tonight is a extended mask use policy. Also uploaded to our clinical resources page.

Clinical guides and new GME info

Hi! Hope everyone is safe and well. We’ve uploaded two new COVID19 clinical guides. One out of Brigham and Women’s Hospital and another from Johns Hopkins. Both meant to serve as guides for COVID care.

We’ve also added some new GME updates. There are hotel rooms available for folks concerned with family exposure to novel coronavirus. Also, a link from the MS1/MS2 at UCSD School of Medicine who are volunteering their time for childcare and family support for those of you who need it!

Updated Mask Use and GME Updates

We received new UCSD Mask Use guidelines today 3/23/2020. The updated documents are included on the website under COVID-19/Clinical Resources. Also included are the ASA’s latest guides on mask use for your reference.

The GME also clarified some points on administrative leave, childcare and employee healthcare benefits related to COVID-19. Please find these under COVID-19/GME Updates. Let us know if you have any questions!

COVID-19 Page

We’ve created a COVID-19 page on our website to help organize the huge amount of information out there and collate some of the rapidly changing guidelines for safety and clinical management. We’ve included some CDC/WHO guidelines as well as UCSD/VASDHS policies. As our residency evolves to address the fluid changes in OR and ICU staffing, this page will also summarize the changes and provide the latest updates as they occur.

OR and Surgical Schedule

  • KOP is closed for now
  • Shiley will run only one OR for the remainder of the week – and may not run ORs for a few weeks after this
  • Much consolidation of out of the OR cases
  • Only leveled or essential cases will be done.

Morning Conference and M&M – cancelled in accordance with current recommendations.

National Conferences – similarly to our own meetings and M&M, these have been cancelled and residents originally scheduled off will be returned to the staffing pool
